Butterfly Playing Cards for Everyday Use

Butterfly Playing Cards Workers Edition features a classic bordered design and an easy-to-read marking system. We made these for everyone who prefers cards with a traditional white border. Here's their history.

The Origin

The beauty and the main powers of the Butterfly Playing Cards lie in the borderless design. However, we know that many magicians prefer decks with a white border for their everyday use.

The bordered design helps with any effects involving turned-over cards, and better hides multiple lifts.

These are the main reasons we created the Butterfly Workers Edition. Ondrej adjusted the marking system to work with the bordered design and placed the markings in all four corners of the back design, which makes them easy to read from almost any angle.

We also kept the one-way indicator on the backs. If you have a card rotated 180 degrees, a quick riffle through the deck will reveal its position.

The decks include a nearly 30-minute tutorial with an explanation of the markings and a few ideas on how to use the deck.

The Red and Blue

Butterfly Playing Cards Workers Edition (Red and Blue)

The red and blue decks are the core of the entire Workers Edition. They were printed on Cartamundi's Slimline stock with True Linen B9 Finish.

As these were made for magicians, we also printed a Gaff Deck to accompany both decks.

The USPC Decks

Butterfly Playing Cards Workers Edition (Pink and Orange)

We love the feel of the decks printed by the United States Playing Card Company (USPC). Their technology does not allow us to print the borderless Butterflies with them, but the bordered Workers were the perfect project to bring to life the first Butterfly Playing Cards printed by the USPC.

So, we printed the Orange and Pink Workers with USPC on their crushed Premium stock with traditional cut.

The Kickstarter Exclusive Decks

Butterfly Playing Cards Workers Edition Kickstarter Exclusive Decks (Purple, Green, and Black)

These three decks - Purple, Green, and Black - were printed based on the voting results of our Kickstarter backers. We printed these as Kickstarter exclusives, and we have not offered them for solo purchase after the campaign.

All three feature custom colors on the court cards that match each deck's back design. Again, the coloring was done by the wonderful Tereza Kovandová.

Holographic Butterfly Playing Cards

Even before the Kickstarter campaign, we've been asked countless times to create a holographic Butterfly deck. During the campaign, many backers voted for this edition, even though we did not originally include it in the voting.

We knew that if we were to print a holographic Butterfly deck, we would need to go all-in. And that's how the Holo Edition of Butterfly Playing Cards was born.

This is the first Butterfly deck with a black background. All the design features and details are made out of sparkly holographic foil. No color was used for this deck.

We actually ended up with two Holo Edition decks. The first print run did not go as planned. The details got muddled in the hot foiling process and came out not as sharp as we wanted. So, as we did not want to scrap 2.000 decks, we named them "Seconds" and offered them at a lower price.

The Holo Edition decks are the only ones here that are not marked.

Workers Edition V2

The core Workers decks, the red and blue versions, sold out before the end of 2025. In March 2026, we released the second edition of red and blue Butterfly Workers.

As Cartamundi no longer prints custom playing cards, we once again turned our heads to our friends at Room One, with whom we've already printed some decks, including the Try-All Sets.

The red and blue Workers V2 decks are printed on Room One's 300gsm Elite stock with traditional cut.

These decks consist of only 55 cards. The three extras are two identical floral pattern Jokers and a double backer. The link to the instructions is sent via email.

Just as we were about to release the decks, we found an error in their one-way face design. The Eight, Nine, and Ten of Hearts do not match the rest of the deck. Otherwise, they are perfect.

This is the reason we lowered the price of the Workers V2 even more than we intended to. This means you can get them as low as 9.5 USD per deck if you buy a brick (twelve decks).

The Conclusion

While we did not initially expect to produce a bordered edition of Butterfly Playing Cards, we are pleased and delighted by the response of magicians and everyone who's enjoyed the Workers so far. The Workers will be a stable part of the Butterfly line-up.

We hope you enjoyed this article! 🦋
